Trained in Padua and Venice, Ippolito Caffi made veduta painting the focus of his work, renewing the eighteenth-century tradition through a new attention to light, atmosphere and contemporary life. He moved to Rome in 1832 and later travelled extensively through Italy, Europe and the Mediterranean, making first-hand observation of place a fundamental part of his practice.

In this unfinished view of Piazza della Signoria, the precise draughtsmanship of the Loggia dei Lanzi contrasts with the freer, more abbreviated treatment of the crowd, carriages and surrounding buildings. Because the work remains unfinished, Caffi’s working process is unusually visible. This also enhances the almost cinematic quality of the scene: rather than simply recording the topography of the square, he presents it as a living urban space shaped by movement, light and the rhythms of everyday life.
