The relative rarity of works by Antonio Gionima reflects the brevity of his career, cut short by his death at just thirty-five. Born in Venice, he trained in Bologna, first under Aureliano Milani and then under Giuseppe Maria Crespi, whose example was decisive in the development of a style that nevertheless remained highly personal. Rapid brushwork, a sumptuous, richly varied palette, sudden effects of light and unusual, ambitious compositional choices are among the most distinctive features of his art.

These qualities are clearly evident in the present Saint Louis IX Departing for the Crusade. Within a tightly compressed space, Gionima organises the king, soldiers and procession into a lively, theatrical composition. Much of the scene’s impact comes from the colour and the contrasts between armour, drapery and shadow. The unusual subject is treated less as a conventional devotional image than as a scene of heroic history, making the work a particularly clear expression of the artist’s originality.
